Description
Living up to its name, the Showy Goldenrod is the showiest of all the approximate 125 native Solidago species, and is absolutely a butterfly and beneficial pollinators dream plant! From mid or late summer in into fall, abundant and showy 12″ long vertical panicles packed with nectar-rich bright yellow daisy-like flowers are perched atop erect, sturdy, branchless stems 3 to 5 feet tall clothed in bright green, lance-shaped leaves up to 6 inches long. The clump slowly spreads by underground rhizomes to maybe 3 feet wide, much like many ornamental grasses do. An exceptionally tough but pretty sun-loving plant that will thrive in infertile and dry soils makes the Showy Goldenrod an ideal choice for brightening up those difficult spots in the landscape or garden.
PLEASE NOTE: Contrary to popular belief, Goldenrod (Solidago) does not cause allergies. Its pollen is sticky so does not blow in the wind. Bees transfer it from plant to plant. If you experience allergy symptoms during the fall it’s most likely from ragweed, which blooms at about the same time as goldenrod.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, Showy Goldenrod can be used as an accent in smaller garden spaces or creates an exceptional show in groupings or mass plantings in sunny landscape or woodland borders and perennial gardens. It will thrive in dry and infertile soils such as on sunny embankments and roadsides. A fine addition to butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, prairie and meadow gardens, cottage gardens, native gardens, and yellow theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2 to 3 feet apart for mass plantings; 6 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Showy Goldenrod is very easy to grow in most any moist to dry well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. It will grow in wet soils but the plants might become floppy. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. Plants can be cut back to the ground after going dormant for winter and before new growth begins to emerge in spring.
